Smoke alarms save lives. They give you early warning of a fire and give you time to escape safely. If they are not working properly you won’t get that warning. Regular testing will help ensure they are working when you need them.
A detector in a kitchen may be heat detectors as kitchens can be smoky without there being a fire. Do not be worried if alarm is exposed to smoke and it does not go off. You should test it and if it then does not sound report it to our repairs department.
This could mean there is something wrong with it. It may just be a low battery but very few of our alarms have replaceable batteries. If you have any concerns about your smoke alarm please contact our repairs department. Do not be tempted to take apart or otherwise disable your alarm as it may put your life at risk.
A mains powered or long life battery alarm will usually last 7 to 10 years before they or the battery need replacing. Your landlord will replace when required. If your alarm uses standard batteries you will need to replace at least once a year. Dust in a smoke alarm can affect how it works. We recommend smoke alarms are vacuumed regularly using the soft brush attachment.
